How To Tackle Half A Socket Set

Friday July 16, 2010

Now that title has probably got you wondering, hasn’t it? But if you have ever owned a complete socket set only for bits and pieces to go astray over time, you will know what the purpose behind this article is.

The point is that it is perfectly possible to buy a new and complete set and then lose bits of it for various reasons. We all know how tempting it is to use a tool and then not put it back straightaway, telling ourselves we’ll do it next time instead. But by the time ‘next time’ comes, we’ve forgotten where we put it. Even though some things will turn up we can still be left with only half a socket set when it should be a complete one.

The question is what do you do when this happens? Should you replace all the items that have gone missing or is it better to buy another complete set?

The answer could well lie in how many bits have gone missing. For instance if you have a 30 piece socket set and only two bits have disappeared, you obviously aren’t going to want to shell out for another complete set. Just make a note of the two missing parts and go out and buy replacements for them.

It would be a different thing entirely if you had a 30 piece set and you only had ten items remaining in it. In this case you would definitely be better buying a brand new one and keeping the remainder of the old one for spares.

So it really depends on the situation you find yourself in. Cost is another factor to consider, and if you are unsure which route to take you might want to work out some sums before making your final decision. Cost up the amount you would pay for each individual replacement and then work out how much you would have to spend on a brand new set. Once you know what the cheapest method will be you can figure out which way to go.

In the end a lot depends on the quality of the items you want to get as well. If you are going to get top quality items for your socket set the costing will be a lot more than if you bought cheap ones. Which way would you go if this happened to you?
